Originally inhabited by the Lenape people, the area that became New York was settled by the Dutch in 1624 as New Amsterdam. The English seized it in 1664 and renamed it for the Duke of York. After serving briefly as the first capital of the United States in 1789, the city expanded rapidly through the 19th century, fueled by the Erie Canal, immigration through Castle Garden and later Ellis Island, and a consolidation in 1898 that joined Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island into one five-borough metropolis.
The 20th century turned New York into a global capital of finance, media, art, and architecture — from the Brooklyn Bridge to the Empire State Building, from Harlem Renaissance jazz to Broadway, hip-hop, and Wall Street. Today's NYC, home to more than 8 million people, remains one of the most diverse and influential cities on Earth.
